Ask a question

By a well known glass artist Joe Hamon from Durango Colorado he has supplied over 20,000 piece to Metropolitan Museum Art they are marked "MMA".

This however is not a mass produced MMA piece that are collected, but a piece from his own collection most likely sold by his wife in her retail shop marked "Joe Hamon" stamped in the bottom.

It is a thick heavy ruffled edge bowl with a crackle on the bottom only. A true piece of art glass from a matertblower! Please read below to learn more about him.

2 7/8" high 7 1/4" across the rim no damage or flaws.

His father, Orville Clinton Hamon, who started his business manufacturing glass chimneys for kerosene lanterns during the dark days of the Depression, would praise his son's skill in glass while observing that son, like father, was just a so-so businessman.
That helps explain why Joe Hamon's largest and most famous customer was his customer for two years before he knew who it was.
He had shipped a few thousand 18th- and 19th-century-style ink wells, whiskey flasks and perfume bottles - with MMA etched into the bottom - to another glass shop that had contracted him without him asking or realizing the final destination. The third year he was asked to ship directly to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The museum sells the glassware and other carefully selected treasures and reproductions to support itself. The Metropolitan is roughly 90 percent of Hamon's business, although he sells to two other museums, and his wife Madge runs a small retail shop.
In one peak year in the early '90s, Hamon supplied the Metropolitan with 20,000 pieces, including 10,000 thin-ribbed amethyst flasks.
